People for Peace Meeting, 7/9/09, at the Chez

Present: Sandy Testin, Jane Haasch, Megan Karth, Marci Reynolds, Steve Gajewski, Bonni Miller, (who did I miss?).

(Please read to the bottom as the potluck idea sounds really good and I don’t want anyone to miss it)!

Peace Day: The lower shelter was reserved and Tom Pease committed BUT, not enough help and energy. It was decided to cancel Peace Day again. Hopefully next year it can be coordinated with the Japanese exchange program and we plan farther ahead to try to get more folks involved. This year the Japanese students are not coming to the US. We also discussed maybe having a Peace Day Homecoming, inviting as many scholarship winners as we could locate. Anyone who has enjoyed Peace Day in the past may want to volunteer early to make sure we can pull it off next year. We also discussed having our scholarship winner show up each year at Peace Day to receive their check.

Art on the Square: August 15

PFP will have a booth. We will sell Palestinian olive oil and dry pancake mix (left from the Peace breakfast at MREA). We will put out any tee shirts and other items we have around. We need volunteers for 2 hr shifts. So far Megan will take 8-10 am, Sandy will take 2-4 in afternoon. We need someone 10-12 and 12-2. Please call Jane if you can help. Marci will order olive oil, Sandy will store it. Sandy will provide change box, Jane will make sure there is change.

Friday night concerts at the Waupaca band shell. (Music and Memories).

We are not sure if PFP is signed up for any more nights. The city is having different groups have booths on the square. Cham Nusz. Are we committed to having a booth any more Friday nights? Let us know.

Peace Studies potluck

We talked about wanting to spend more time brainstorming and talking about what we are about in PFP. We have done a lot of activities over the years. Some of the most satisfying were sending kids to Peace Camp and holding high\ school peace studies groups and sending kids to the UN and Washington DC after they did lots of study about an issue. We are intriqued by a teacher from Eagle River who is teaching Peace Studies in a very conservative HS. We would like to invite her to a potluck to talk to us about how she is managing to do what she does, what does it take, etc. Cham and Megan got to hear her earlier this year at the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice annual meeting. Megan will contact Cham about getting in touch with this teacher and will report back to the group.

Peace Vigils

We were holding small peace vigils on the 3^rd Friday of each month at 5 pm to coincide with Iraq Moratorium day. We have not met this summer, partly not to conflict with Strawberry Fest and now with the Music and Memories. There are many communities in the state holding vigils monthly or more often. Anyone interested? This is not a partisan activity but one to make folks think, including ourselves. Anyone interested, talk to Megan.

People for peace meeting

November 13, 2008

Present: marci, jane, pat reckrey, sandy, steve, bonni, mary brandt.

I. treasurer’s report: pat reports that we have $957.84, with $648 being earned at the mrea/wnpj/p4p pancakes for peace breakfast last june…bonni said that we need to add $427 from oil sales, so our total is actually $1384.84. At this point, we have sold enough oil and cous cous to break even, (earned $364.50 at arts festival in august) and from this point on any sales are pure profit. More on this later…

all agreed to renew membership to wnpj. Pat to send check.

II. oil and cous cous sales plans: arts center, chocolate sale at Jensen center; Christmas presents for our relatives??? At this point, the plans for oil sales include:

a. sale at the Jensen Center: their chocolate festival: the opil nad cous cous will be sold at the artha table. Louise will pick it up here at the chez and take care of all the details.

b. any leftover will be sold at the Waupaca Community Arts Center sale on December 6. Marci will attend to this from 12-4pm. We will also sell fair trade coffee and get $1 per bag, Bonni will order it, thanks Bonni…it is called “peace on earth coffee,” and is from the same company that her fair trade coffee comes from that she is currently selling. Good stuff.

c. and finally the oil and cous cous will continue to be sold at the chez.

d. We debated whether or not we should order more, but decided to wait and see. All agreed that the best thing is to sell it all. Will do the sale again next spring/summer.

e. If anyone wants to buy oil for gifts they better hurry up before it is all gone!!!

III. vigil news? This is happening the 3^rd Friday of every month and has been attended. Gather at 5pm on the square.

IV. Holiday peace recital dec 13: Sandy has taken care of the arrangements, with help from Kari:

a. kari is organizing string players who will do a singalong carol thing

b. the date is December 13, from 2-3:00, and from 3:30-4:30. this is to encourage the first batch of people to leave so there is enough room to hold this popular event.

c. Mr./ Biba has an entire lineup of students

d. Bonni is making cookies.

e. Sandy is creating programs and a few fliers to post

f. Marci will put a little blurb in the paper, we don’t want to advertise too much cuz we don’t have room for too many more people than the families and usual crowd!!! Article will state that this is an open house atmosphere, and that we request a $5 donation.

g. Marci will emcee

h. Proceeds will be split between the food pantry and the bread basket meal.

V. Report on the youth that were to go to the nonviolence conference this weekend? In the end, the youth that were set up to go by betty manion could not go. However we received a letter from a woman in Stevens Point who requested the tuition grant and all voted to give it to her.

VI. Rummage sale storage??? Folks that absolutely need storage of items for the rummage sale can call Jane Haasch for information. We discussed donating the stuff leftover from the sale this year to the Japanese exchange program group who'll also be having a fundraising rummage in '09. Their sale is in June. If anyone has stuff that they need to store out of their house, contact Jane.

VII. Peace day: sandy will get the park reserved Jan 2 so we don’t miss out this year! She will also call tom pease about playing again. She will choose the date that does not conflict with the arts festival. We will not know about the Japanese kids til late spring, so pointless to try and coincide the dates. However, if they are not here for peace day, they will likely be here for the festival. Sandy also would like to see if we can get the fire spinners that were at the festival in 2007. (adam burgestede) the tentative date for peace day would be the Sunday before the festival: august 9, 2009.

VIII. All agreed that we should skip the December meeting, and make a point of reviewing the causes we support at our January meeting. We have a very stable sum of money now, with our regular events and fundraising,m and it is nice to be able to choose certain orgs and events etc…that promote peace in the world and locally. It has been suggested that we offer some sort of family conflict resolution class in conjunction with the county…we will look in to this. ***we need to determine if we should change our meeting to the 1^st, second or 4^th Thursday, marci has a conflict with the 3^rd…

IX. Marci suggested that we create a p4p brochure that states our mission, meeting dates, regular events and causes we support to be distributed around town. She will work on this. Jane suggested that we set aside money for a future speaker and sited as an example arun ghandi. !!!

X. Marci listed p4 events that occur annually, and all remarked at how nice it is that we do have this cyclical schedule of public events:

Spring: rummage sale

Mrea pancakes for peace breakfast (june)

Annual scholarship (may)

The fair trade sale at the arts festival in august

Peace day (august)

The holiday concert in December at the chez

The oil sales

The road cleanup (2x per year)

The monthly vigils for peace

MINUTES OF THE PEOPLE FOR PEACE MTG. --– May 15, 2008

We have $1088.73 and have just netted an additional $1531.86 from the rummage sale at Sandy’s –which was a big success.Thanks, Sandy.... We decided to offer two peace scholarships this year for $750 each as we had advertised the rummage sale as for the Peace Scholarships. Pat will present them to two students from Waupaca who were chosen through votes by members at the May 29^th Awards Presentation. She will also contact Bob Cloud about publishing one of the essays.

Much discussion on the Midwest Renewable Energy Fair and the pancake breakfast that we are sponsoring Friday, June 20^th on the grounds

Any interested helpers are still urged to sign up with Camomille Nucz. We’ll meet on June 17^th tat 2:00 p.m. at the Chez to mix up try ingredients to be used for the batter. Ingredients are not being donated to us this year, so if you have any contacts for donations, contact Cam.

Cam explained health recommendations to be followed during the prep and serving of food. She will oversee the operations so they are met.

PEACE VIGILS again were brought to the table by Megan. We decided to try to gather May 23 ( 4^th FRIDAY) from 5:30-6:00 at the Square. It’s hard to find convenient times/dates, but we hope that 4^th FRIDAY time will work. Try to join us Square.

We agreed to have PEACE DAY on a weekday in early August when the Japanese kids and chaperones are here . (The weekend dates were already filled at South Park) Sandy will check on dates. We hope Tom Pease will join us.

It looks like we’ll have a 4^th of July "event" at the Parade. Red, white and blue hybrid cars in formation with the Louise/Marcie majorette combo. Maybe a sign that says PEACE THROUGH CONSERVING ENERGY. Jane, Cam, and Megan driving....

There will be a booth at the Arts Festival selling olive oil, t-shirts, and other PFP stuff. Tricia was interested in doing that.

We thought a meeting yearly to discuss causes we might like to support would be a good idea. There are so many places where our few dollars might go to help people working for peace (ie. Bustan, Palestinian causes....)

People for Peace: Notes from the April 17 Meeting:

1. Rummage Sale - last year we raised over $1000 with this fairly painless fundraiser!

We will hold our sale on Thursday thru Sat AM, May 8 - 10

8 AM to 4 PM on Thurs and Fri

8 AM til noon on Sat

218 E Lake Street (Sandy Testin and Charlie Rathjen's home)

Set up - time to deliver your stuff and help price - will be Wed, May 7 from 3 til 6 PM

No Bake sale this year

We will have a plant sale - Pat will again share from her gardens.

If you have plants you can share please bring - these were a huge hit last year!

Tables: If you have long tables, let Sandy know.

Advertising: Marci will do an article for the May 2nd paper, the funds will go towards our scholarships.

***We are hoping that each of us could call one neighbor or friend and ask if they have goodies to offer for the garage sale and then pick them up and bring them on Wed afternoon during set up.

We will read essays and make choices during Rummage sale so drop by to read and place your vote when you can.

We decided this year to offer 2 $500 scholarships

4. MREA pancake breakfast: Friday June 20

A sign-up list went around.

Marci will send an email to all the students who signed up at our People for Peace table at the HS and offer them a free day pass to energy fair in return for helping out in the AM

5. Report from High School Visit:

Steve and Larry went to the HS to share information about PFP and our scholarship.

They gave out 20 essay forms!

Also gave out some t-shirts

Felt students were very receptive

6. Arts Festival: We will be setting up a fair trade table with olive oil and coffee at the Arts Fair in August.

Tricia has volunteered to staff this.

Marci will order the oil - Larry wants a whole case.

7. Peace Banner

Notes from November 15, 2007 Meeting

Treasurer’s Report: $900
Pat will do a more detailed report about the Peace delegation and costs and income for next meeting

Women to Women Peace week:
Kate led a review of the week –
Jane Haasch will send a thank you to Mike Kirk and the Historical Society and a $25 donation
Pat read a commendation letter from Kagen’s office. Kate will see if it could be changed slightly to make it appropriate for the newspaper.
Kate will send a thank you note to the High School
Kate shared some evals from Maryland

School Military Recruitment – we discussed the best way to deal with the issue of recruiters wandering freely through the High School
Larry will see if he can find the anti recruitment info he got at Bob Fest
Pat may write a letter asking about recruiters and current policy – maybe this is something we need to deal with as a Peace Group

Name Change ?? – We discussed how important the issue of justice is for peace. We discussed the possibility of changing our name to Waupaca Area People for Peace and Justice. Interesting thoughts on what justice means and the connotations it has for different people.

Announcements:
Living Waters Fair Trade Sale We will have our buttons, tshirts, CD’s and Olive Oil for sale at the Fair Trade Sale on Saturday 11/17 at the Chez. Sandy will make up a price list. Pat volunteered to take stuff to Living Waters on Sunday and sell.

Christmas Open House Recital: Saturday, December 15 at 2 PM at the Chez
Sandy is trying to recruit musicians. Mr. Biba has a number of students who will be playing. Sandy will put up a flyer at the Chez.. Donations will go to the Etta Projects (like last year) and to Jen Potts home Rotary project for AIDs victims- many of which are orphaned children. Be sure to come and support the musicians!

hi all. here are the notes from our meeting...hope i got it all right!

FILMING/DOCUMENTARY MAKING BY TODD MALLASCH AND CHRIS JOHNSON

Monday:

1. film at airport ok.

2. Holly Center in Waupaca ok.

Tuesday:

1. film at the MREA in Custer ok.

2. film at evening event at Library ok.

Wednesday:

1. Unsure about Rotary...will need to check on this.

2. unsure about school. Kate Saunders felt the school would not go for filming unless there were students involved. Kate is meeting with the principal tomorrow am, and will ask about it. Marci will ask Chris to get 1 or 2 students who normally film the council meetings to be involved in any way. ( I feel that this part of the trip should be documented, and some students interviewed about their views after the presentation, so if we can portray it as "a student experience of filming a documentary" i bet they will let us do it... )

3. Peace Cafe ok. they felt that it would be ok to do some interviews at 5pm prior to the peace cafe at the chez. (we will be eating dinner at 5pm)

Thursday:

1. dinner and bonfire ok

Friday:

1. departure ok.

Also, we will not be meeting again as a group prior to the 22nd, but felt that if they wanted to interview host families, it would be ok to call them prior to the week. some questions related to "what do you expect to learn form this experience?" etc would be appropriate.

Our next big people for peace meeting will take place next thursday the 17th at the chez at 7pm. there will be other p4p members that they could interview then as well.

REVIEW OF WEEK ITINERARY

we went through the week events. Monday Pat and Marci will pick guests up in Appleton and bring them to Waupaca to the Holly Center. Jane Haasch will arrange for the speaker and tea. Host families will not be required to attend this. They can meet up with the guests at Sandy's house at the potluck.

All other events were discussed and there are no problems with any of them.

key things that we added:

1. Pat will prepare the reception food for the library event. Marci will provide cider.

2. cham will be responsible for a banner that retreat participants can write on and sew little things as remembrances to.

3. marci will provide paper and envelopes for the stationary project, louise will provide stampers.

4. marci and jane will be glazing mugs at dianne veeser's house probably this sunday. she will let louise and kate know what time so they can help.

5. pat shared tha registration list, and we have probably got about 26 people. marci will send one more reminder out especially to specific people not on the current registration list...in case any more people want to register.

6. we will sell olive oil and mugs at every public event.

COSTS

we discussed the costs of the various things that will take place:

1. lunch at Weasel's: p4p will pay for the guests and their hosts. Marci confirmed this with Harris and lunch will be buffet plus a drink and tip. estimate about $100 for this.

2. Mr. Pecore will get $100.

3. lunch at school: Kate thinks that this will be paid by the school.

4. dinner at chez: we will pay for just the guests, everyone else is on their own. plan for $100 to cover guests. everyone reminded to get their menu choices in to bonni!

5. possible honorarium for speaker is $100

6. bonnie block's fee is $300

7. catering for lunch and dinner at the retreat estimated at about $600-700. We will not have breakfast catered, Cham will take care of a simple cereal and milk and toast breakfast at the b&b.

8. dancers: we agreed to offer them $350.

9. we agreed to give Artha at least $200 plus a gift.

this totals nearly $2000, which is leaving us enough money for unforeseen things and our spring scholarship!

OTHER

1. publicity: Kate will have library advertise the tuesday night event seperate from the article that angie landsverk will be writing.

2. Hala's status still unknown, but does not look hopeful. there may be another woman who is a palestinian refugee in washington available but it is unknown if she will come to wisconsin or not. marci has invited her. ???will we be able to get our money back for hala's flight??? marci will inquire...

August 23, 2007

Present: larry craig, steve g., bonni, marci, pd hill, louise pease, kate saunders, jane haasch, and true colors members annie, and larry la ven.

1. treasurer's report: we do not have the actual checkbook but pat r. did e-mail that the total balance is about $4000, with the outliers and incoming money. Will have a more complete report at the next meeting.

2. post peace day: debrief and suggestions? Main suggestion was to try and coordinate the next year’s event with the Japanese exchange visit. Problem is that they choose their date so late in the year. Decided that we should reserve the shelter for 2 Sundays in august for now, the 3^rd and the 10^th of 2008, and communicate with that group in the meantime.

3. post-trash pick-up 7 people went and it went well. 1 ½ hours.

4. olive oil sales report, further fundraising larry craig strongly encouraged members present to buy the olive oil that we are selling. 8 bottles sold as a result. (good work larry!!!) a long discussion was held about whether or not we should order more oil to sell. Arts festival sold 1 ½ cases. Rain was prohibitive, as well as some people were apparently put off by the nature of the oil being to benefit Palestinians! Good awareness raising opportunities… Decided that if we do order it again, we need a venue at which to sell it. Jane called someone from one of the churches who has done a fair trade sale in the fall in the past, and found out that this event will happen this year again, they will get back to us with particulars. If this event is a go, (November) we will try to link up with it. Hopefully Caanan fair trade will have other items to sell by then too. Right now we have just 4 bottles left! (call marci if you are interested. $22 a bottle, we net $7 per bottle.) As for the wreaths, we agreed to do this again if they are available, since it brought in $1000 last year. Marci will contact the group in Oshkosh.

5. w2w trip update: set date(s) for planning: we discussed some details and why we need to do planning even though we have a pretty good schedule laid out already:

a. since judy miner from wnpj posted the flier from the east coast group to all members, marci has had many inquiries as to whether or not others can attend…organizations interested include: Madison Rafa sister city project; Madison Friends of a Jewish voice for peace, and WILPF, all from Madison; a woman from Fond du lac, Judy Miner from wnpj and someone from the office of global justice and peace near Milwaukee.

b. we need to work out our budget and make sure we can cover all expenses, and what those expenses are

c. the retreat may be well attended and we need to anticipate all needs: housing, food, activities…registration, and what we should charge. We may need to find a larger place to hold this…

Annie would be interested in attending the post retreat in Maryland and would need funding for airfare. She has been integral in the past few years in the planning of the yearly peace vigil on 9/11, and also the earth day litter pick up. She is interested in becoming more involved in the peace movement and would value training that would be offered at the retreat in Maryland. (More on Annie and True Colors at the end of these minutes.)

Marci has contacted the mrea about doing a program and waits to hear back from them.

Bonni has 3 native American contacts. The visiting women have all requested that they be able to meet and talk with Native American people if possible, due to the similarities in issues with the Palestinians.

a. Dorothy Davidson, an elder from the Stockbridge Munsie tribe

b. Gail Sweet, Wi current poet laureate, an Oneida

c. Mr. Pekore, an elder who is already on board and will be available for any time during the stay.

Marci suggested that we try to get Gail to do some of her poetry at the peace café on wed night, and Dorothy and mr. pekore to come to the retreat. All agreed that being able to meet and talk informally would be a great addition to our program for the visitors. We should offer them all a speaker’s fee.

A meeting of those interested in the detail planning for the event is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept 5 at the chez at 7pm.

6. between fences update: Kate reported that the movie Iron Wall will be shown as part of the exhibit. Date chosen is a date that we meet so she will find alternative date and get back to us. We should promote the film as we are cosponsoring its viewing.

7. other??? True Colors: the young people who have been doing a peace vigil on 9/11 ever since the tragedy have adopted the name True Colors for their group, carrying it over from the recent Arts on the Square event. Annie and Larry have been core members of this group and came tonight to discuss promoting their upcoming annual event. Their group is also responsible for doing a litter pick up by the river every earth day.

Every year at their vigil, which is an event involving gathering, candles and acoustic music jam on the square, they raise donations and then they give the money to a charitable cause. Last year they chose Katrina. This year they would like to choose people for peace! This money could be used towards Annie’s airfare to the post w2w retreat.

This year their 9/11 event will include music, chalking memorial squares and placing a candle on each square for $1. Also they may do some sort of dew rag activity. All p4p members are invited to attend the event. It will start at 7pm, on 9/11, of course…

July 19, 2007 at the Chez

Present: Austin, Maggie, Larry, Pat, Sandy, Trisha, Pat Hill, Marci, Jane, Kate

1. treasurer's report: we made $500 at the barn dance. Made $510 so far on the mailing. Total in account is $3250.

2. follow up on barn dance: see above. We split proceeds this year with the Petersons, who need a new roof on their barn. Thanks Peterson’s for allowing us to raise funds every year!!!

3. peace day planning:

a. lantern supplies and setup: Jane and Kate will get from Megan’s basement and bring to park and
set up.

b. peace doves: Cham has them. Marci will check to see if they can be at the park.

c. tom pease: sound...songs...program...any ideas for kids groups? Larry suggested having John Gusmer present a small speech about international exchange. We should honor John and Rotary because of their involvement with exchange, this is a gandhian principal in peacemaking. Larry and or Sandy will pursue this. Also Jane has invited the FVTC Carribean and Central American students. Larry will invite the mayor again to introduce John Gusmer. Sandy will invite Tom Link, who is the scholarship recipient. Maggie Laven will read a poem, and so will Pat Reckrey. Music by Tom, Marci will help. We will also have a moment of silence for the soldiers who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan in recent years, including the recent death of the Manawa person, and also a moment of silence for the Iraqis killed.

d. article in paper: Pat Reckrey will do and submit.

e. banners???No word yet from Megan, but will follow up

f. to eat or not to eat? picnic? treats? All agreed that who ever wants to can picnic before activities start.

g. membership table and sales of t-shirts etc... Steve agreed to man this table

h. possibility of drumming with bill kehl (remote)...$? Bill can’t do it this year.

i. peace biker t-shirts??? Unclear information…needs follow-up.

j. other??? Fliers: Larry will do again. Needs info, so we will get him the information needed. Larry suggested an ad in the paper and Pat will look into the pricing.

4. women to women trip planning

a. facilitator for retreat and plans for retreat: Marci presented info on Bonnie
Block, former admin of WNPJ who does workshops and also has an interest and expertise in the middle east and is affiliated with some groups in Madison that are working on pro-palestinian and peace issues. All agreed that we should hire her for the 200-400 dollars she charges. We wil intersperse ideas throughout the retreat like sharing recipes, a craft, walks in woods, yoga…

b. coordinating host families: the following have expressed an interest in hosting: Craigs, Marci and Fran, Kate, and Pease’s.

c. update on fences schedule and coordinating that with the guests: Kate reported that things are getting very organized. Info on the W2W trip is posted on the library website. The women will speak at the library Oct 23 at a public forum and at the hs wed at 1pm oct 24. She needs a title for their program which will go in the library ads. Marci will get this to her.

d. committee to do further planning and report back to group in august??? Those interested include Marci, Sandy, Pat R, Pat Hill, Jane, Trisha, and kate.

5. further fundraising opportunities: peace wreaths and olive oil??? Pat Reckrey agreed to help Marci with the wreath sales in terms of keeping the money straight and all agreed we should do this fundraiser, we made over $1000 last year. Also Marci brought info on sales of olive oil from Palestine as a fundraiser/awareness campaign that would also support the Palestinians in that some of the money goes to help them plant new olive groves. Larry volunteered to buy 10 bottles himself. Trisha offered to sell it at a table at the arts fest August 18. Marci will see if we can get a shipment by then. A case is $180 for 12 1000ml bottles. We can mark them up a bit. All agreed we will order 5 cases to start.

Notes from June 21st Meeting

Treasurer’s Report: $2345

Pancake Breakfast Update: Big success!!! $913 profit. Grill worked great – made a huge difference. Cam thinks we fed about 350 people. Health Department inspection had suggestions for us which were incorporated as possible. Cam has made notes about improvements for next year. A few other comments: more big aluminum bowls; Change recipe: ½ gal + 1 cup of milk per double batch.

Nonprofit Status: Cam has not had time to work on this yet.

People for Peace HS Scholarship: This year’s winner is Tom Link. Tom hopes to go into architecture and work on green building.

Membership Letter: Sandy wrote up letter. We used Louise’s mailing list with advice from Louise about who to send it to. Letters were folded, stuffed, and sealed. Pat will mail out.

Peace Day: Peace Day is Sunday August 5th – coming up quickly!!!

i. TREASURER’S REPORT: Pat Reckrey not here, but Marci has check book and reports balance of $1912.04, which included the deposit from the rummage sale. ($1146.90) Larry Craig added $20 to the pot as due from plant sales.

ii. RUMMAGE SALE UPDATE: see above. Netted a lot of money! Discussed making this an annual event. Sandy said that many people told her that they would have contributed lots of stuff if they had known about it. Notes for next year:

a. Thursday is a must!!! And we should have it for 3 days again.

b. Plants were a huge hit. Thanks so much to Pat Hill!

c. The timing was good, should have again in May.

d. Ads and news were discussed. We are not sure if sales would have been the same if it was obviously a people for peace event, or maybe they would have been better…signs should be better so that people know to what they are contributing.

e. Larry needs to work the Saturday am. Great salesman!!

f. Larry said that we should offer to pick stuff up from people in order to get more stuff…

Thanks so much to Sandy for donating so much energy and her space for the sale!!!

iii. NON-PROFIT STATUS: Cham not here, so this was deferred.

iv. PANCAKES AT MREA: TO DO:

A. PANCAKE COOKER: Todd has arranged for us to get the cooker.

B. VOLUNTEERS AT FAIR: list not here, so we will need to follow up per e-mail.

C. MIXING UP INGREDIENTS: date remains same. Volunteers for this on list.

Addendum: Marci and Bonni followed up with Cham who is in charge of this event. She stated that everything is all set and that she will send out the list of volunteers to everyone in a separate e-mail. Everyone please show up to your assigned time!!!

v. PEACE SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS: The winner is from Waupaca High School. The awards ceremony will be May 31 at 8:15 at Waupaca High School. All agreed that Larry should present the award. It would be nice if Maggie also attended as a past recipient. The check will be made out to the recipient. Pat Reckrey will be back in time to help with this. Maggie and Sarah suggested including the alternative high school kids next year when recruiting for the scholarship.

Addenum: Larry can not present the award, so we need someone to step forward and volunteer to do this!

vi. HIGHWAY CLEANUP: Will be this coming Saturday after the peace vigil. Assemble on the square around 11am. Thanks Kevin!

vii. PEACE VIGILS: every 3^rd Saturday at 10 am on the square. Sidewalk art encouraged for these vigils.

viii. MEMBERSHIP LETTER: Sandy has finished the letter and will send out to Louise Pease’s mailing list, which is quite large. Much discussion about the cost of this mailing…Sandy will print ?500? and we will stuff envelopes at the next meeting. We will also distribute them to the co-op in Stevens Point. Thanks Sandy!!!

ix. PEACE DAY BANNER: Megan will proceed with this, can get reasonable banners at the liquidator. Discussed having a peace day banner (date is August 5 this year, park is reserved and Tom Pease is available) down at the town entrance near the recycling center.

x. BETWEEN FENCES UPDATE: Kate has scheduled the women to Women guests to speak on Tuesday evening at the library. Also they are scheduled to speak at the High School for an all school assembly on Wednesday at 1pm. They will also probably be requested to stay after and meet with some smaller classes, as well as speak at Weyauwega and Iola. Pat to continue to arrange these dates. See below for more information.

xi. WOMEN TO WOMEN VISIT THIS FALL:

A. UPDATE ON INFO: The British women have their tickets. The east coast women are sending the invitational letters in a couple of weeks to the middle eastern ladies. Marci read a letter from one woman who may come named Hala. East coasters are planning trip to DC, State department, sights.

B. PROGRAM PLANNING: discussed our general program. Megan read the goals that the east coasters have established and these were appreciated by all. Megan suggested that we write to the women and ask what they would like to see included in the program for the week. We will need to do a planning session for more detail on the Wisconsin leg of their journey, but at this time, the general outline of the way things look is as follows:

a. Monday: Women arrive in Appleton. (time unknown yet) Will take them to Waupaca, where they will meet their host families, go to the homes and settle in. Pot luck that evening with People for Peace, location to be determined, possibly Sandy’s home. Low key so that they can rest a little and we can all get to know each other a bit.

b. Tuesday: plans for this day include some time at the MREA for a presentation on local sustainable living; possible trip to La Clinica, Migrant health services; Evening will be the speaking engagement at the Library with the Between the Fences exhibit, open to the public. Social to follow.

c. Wednesday: am speak at Rotary. Rest of the day reserved for speaking at the schools. Evening Peace Café at the Chez Marche with music and festivities, also open to the public.

d. Thursday: leave for Artha. Retreat planning needed. Some ideas include sharing dance, culture and cooking; walking in woods with tree and native plant identification, and canoing; Native American stories, with an elder (Bonni has a couple of contacts, and will start working on this. This was a request form one of the British ladies. We may also do a bonfire or a pipe ceremony in the wigwam at Artha. Marci will talk to Bob.) Drumming; yoga; other activities with the focus on growing friendships and peace. Several P4P members interested in establishing friendships with the women in order to remain pen pals and potentially visit the middle east in the future. All of these aspects will be worked into the retreat. Also we would like to open the retreat to other peace group members in the state through WNPJ. Other important planning points will include meals, sleeping arrangements (Artha will donate the retreat house, thanks Bob and Marguerite!!!)

e. Friday: they need to leave!

C. FUNDRAISING NEEDED: we are doing well. (we have $1400 towards the trip so far. Estimate that we can raise $3000 by the fall. Upcoming fundraisers include:

a. MREA pancake breakfast ($600)

b. Barn dance and basket auction ($800)

c. Membership letters ($500)

d. Wreaths ($600)

e. Peace day donations ($200)

D. WHO WANTS TO GO TO MARYLAND??? This was discussed and Kate Saunders does want to go, as well as Marci. We discussed whether or not p4p will help fund this, and it was decided that we need to first see how much we will need for the women who will be coming here. Also, it was suggested that some of our newer young women members go, with P4P helping with their expenses. Larry and Sandy both offered to contribute $100 each towards the young womens’ trips.

xii. OTHER: Kate will start working on a bibliography for us to start studying on Middle east affairs. Marci will ask the East coasters and our guests for suggested reading. Kevin has gotten the movie “Iron Wall” and this will be available and also shown publicly during the Between the Fences period.

NON PROFIT STATUS REPORT: Cham not here, deferred til next meeting

PANCAKES AT THE MREA: UPDATE AND SIGN UP: list passed around again. Todd reported on the giant Lion’s club pancake cooker which we all agreed we should rent. Pat Reckrey will check with WNPJ to see if they want to split the rental fee. We will also need to provide propane tank and transport the cooker to and from the mrea in a big truck. Marci or larry will provide truck. Bonni said that eggs can be cooked on camp stoves.

PEACE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS: 3 applications so far. All were read and comments made. Pat Reckrey took the vote. There may be one more application. Will await review of this application before final decision made. All decided that Larry Craig should present the award.

W2W TRIP IN OCT 2007 UPDATE: not much new except that the British ladies have purchased their airline tix. Unsure about the status of the Middle eastern ladies and their visas.

HIGHWAY CLEANUP: cleanup date set: Saturday May 19 after the peace vigil, ie 11am. Meet at the square.

PEACE VIGILS ON SATURDAYS: every third Saturday am from 10-11. all encouraged to join in. There have been ads in the paper.

FOLLOW-UP ON SPEAKERS? No-one here to address this, so it must be on hold for next fall.

STRAWBERRYFEST? All agreed that since MREA is on same weekend we will not spend our energy here. Steve G. still wants to have a table in front of the Chez, and he can if he wishes to.
Membership letter: Sandy shared her draft of a membership letter. All approved, she will do the mailing and let Pat R. know the cost of postage. She will use Pease’s mailing list. If she gets the letter done before the next meeting we can help her with the addressing and stuffing at our next meeting.

Peace Day Banners: we can get a large banner to post about peace day, all agreed that if cost reasonable we should do this. (who was going to do this???)

Film opportunity: Kevin mentioned that he saw a film on Jimmy Carter’s Website called “The Iron Wall” that costs just $10. It was recommended by Jimmy, about the effect of the wall in Palestine. He will purchase it and we will view it and possibly show in the community in conjunction or preparation for the W2W visit next fall.

An Inconvenient Truth will be shown at Library courtesy of Jane Haasch on May 16 at 6pm.

Austin Gauer contacted several teachers about the W2W visit and them speaking at the school. He will approach Ms. Schultz, Mr. Phair and Ms. Simonson again as well as the principal. He has talked to Mr. Young and Polo. Polo was receptive so far. Good job Austin! See below…

Kate Saunders arrived late and stated that the public library is planning an exhibit next fall (Sept 15-Oct 27) called Between Fences, from the Smithsonian. They wish to involve various community groups. This includes involving the schools. She will be meeting with the high school Tuesday, and will follow up on Austin’s work above. The last week of the exhibit will be when our W2W visitors are here, so all agreed that they should speak at the library either Wed or Thurs night of that week. Kate will check on which night works best. Very exciting!

Rummage sale update: reviewed dates and plans for sale at Sandy Testin’s house:
a. May 10, 10-4; 11 10-3; and 12 10-3.
b. Set up will be Wed may 9
c. Need tables
d. Pat hill working on plants/seedlings; if anyone has small plastic pots she could use them.
e. All encouraged to bring baked goods
f. Sandy discourages clothing unless it is special ie vintage
g. Do not drop things off earlier than wed please
h. If anyone is unsure of when they signed up to work, call sandy. We will review the worker list at our next meeting.
Some post-meeting thoughts: are we putting an article in the paper about the sale? And posting of signs? Things to discuss at next meeting…also, sandy please bring the sign up list.

non-profit status: We were denied to set up an account under the Waupaca Foundation. Cham will proceed with the process and have some more info at our next meeting.
pancakes at the mrea: cham sent around the sign up list and most signed up for various shifts. This event will be held the Friday of the Energy Fair (June 15) and we will split the proceed s with WNPJ. Per cham, all ingredients will be donated. We are in need of dry ingredients to donate. Bonni will purchase what else is needed, and she has estimated an amount for this, we will write her a check at the next meeting.
Discussed cookstoves and griddles. Todd Mallasch pointed out that griddles draw a lot of electricity, and we discussed asking around to either the Lions or the “pancake man” to see about borrowing their giant pancake cookers. Todd and Maggie will each investigate these possibilities.
We will be mixing the dry ingredients together at the Chez on Saturday June 9. All welcome to come and help.
peace scholarship: Pat Reckrey sent in an article to area newspapers and fliers to the high schools. Larry and Marci will go to Waupaca High School and set up an info table during lunch on Tuesday April 3 at 1115. Maggie may also attend. They will have fliers about the scholarship at the table.
update on W2W trip: Marci reported that the airline tix from Baltimore to Appleton appear less expensive so it looks as though our fundraising plans should suffice.
Summary of fundraising events: rummage sale in May, MREA Pancake Breakfast in June, Barn dance and silent auction in July, letter-writing/membership drive soon. (Sandy has a letter she will bring to next meeting) Also, Strawberry fest table to sell our items. *We need to use $500 out of our current balance for the scholarship. So we are sort of starting at square one.
As to who is coming, Marci reported that we should know next week as the Brit women are meeting this weekend to decide.
Austin reported that he talked to Mr. Phair about the women speaking at the high school but thinks that he will need to talk to some other teachers. Suggested Mr. Polebetski. All agreed that the women should speak at the school, and Maggie thought we should approach other schools in the area as well. She will contact Weyauwega.
Marci shared 2 documents recently sent by Ruth Davies, from W2W, who goes regularly to the West Bank, and is coming to the US next fall. She will forward these 2 documents to p4p members. They provide a lot of talking points about Palestine as well as her own recent diary of her trip there, which answers the question “why are we doing this exchange program?”
Will continue to update on plans at next meeting.
next highway cleanup scheduled by Kevin to be Saturday April 28. Kevin will bring more details to next meeting which is the Thursday before this date.
Mary Naylor is holding peace vigils the 3rd Saturday am of the month on the courthouse square. These are at 10am. Megan suggested that we make some cardboard doves to hold. She will get the pattern to us.

The treasurer’s report –total: $740.14

Scholarship: Flyers are needed to distribute at WHS in March at the PFP information table. Marci Reynolds and/or Pat Reckrey need to take care of this item.

GARAGE SALE: This fundraiser will be held on Thursday, May 10 (8am-4 pm), Friday, May 11(8 am -3 pm) & Saturday, May 12 (8 am-3 pm) at Sandy Testin’s home; Lake Street, Waupaca. Phone 258-7510. Workers are also needed on Wednesday, May 9 @ 6:30 PM to price the rummage sale items.
Please call Sandy Testin to let her know which of the hours you are able to work!

PFP members are asked to start collecting items to sell. Suggested items: books, furniture, knick knack, house wares, toys and vintage clothing. We will also be selling plants and baked goods. Let Megan Karth or Sandy Testin know if you are bringing anything of special interest or great value so that it can be included in the Rummage sale ad.

Items for the sale can be brought to Testin’s garage on Tuesday, May 8 after 6 pm.

Tables are needed for displaying sale items. Steve and Kate committed to bring 1 large table each. More tables will be needed for displaying sale items, let Sandy know if you have tables available.

MREA Breakfast fundraiser: Friday June, 15 from 6:30am-10:30 am At the MREA grounds in Custer, WI. This year PFP will get 50% of the profits from the breakfast. We also plan to sell our T-shirts, CD’s, etc as we did last year. The breakfast will be advertised as a Peace event this year. We need camp stoves; electric griddles/frying pans. PFP is also looking for any donated items: fruit, eggs, dry ingredients, etc.

Bonni Miller asks that volunteers stop by Chez Marche by Friday, Feb. 23 to sign up to volunteer for times and tasks for this event. Cooks, servers, runners, etc are needed to staff the breakfast. One volunteer is needed to arrive at the Chez on June 15 by 5:30 am to help pre-cook items to be brought to the site. Volunteers are also needed on Wednesday June 6th @ 8:30 am and Saturday, June 9 @3 pm to mix dry ingredients for the pancakes.
One or two people with trucks are needed to haul grills and ingredients to the MREA on Thursday evening, June 13.

Women to Women for Peace visit is October 22-26, Kate Saunders contacted the Winchester Academy, they could be interested, however the group thought that since Monday is the group’s travel day, that Monday evening should be a light social gathering (potluck at Testins’?) to meet the women and transport them to their host homes. Bonni Miller will check for availability of the Waupaca Library’s large meeting rooms for Tuesday October 23 from 5-8pm for a public program followed by a social gathering, either at the library or at Chez Marche. Contacts are underway to have the women speak at the high school on Tuesday. Wed., Oct 24/Thurs., Oct 25 are scheduled for workshops at Artha studios in Amherst.

Agenda for Women to Women for Peace visit October 2007

Monday Oct 22-Friday Oct 26

Our guests will be arriving after a very busy week of sightseeing in DC and visiting various public offices. What we would like to offer is an opportunity for our guests to meet our small community, and also engage with peace-minded people in the Rural Midwest. Another important aspect of our program will be the importance of alternative energy and sustainable living in regards to peace.

Monday Oct 22: transport guests from airport (Appleton? Milwaukee?)

Host homes: guests assigned to host homes: depending on time of flight, guests go to host homes and settle in. spend time with hosts. Hosts to provide breakfast on Monday and Tuesday.

Dinner: potluck at host home: maybe Sandy’s house? Or Marci’s.

?Winchester Academy? Kate Saunders will check to see if we could possibly have the program that evening. Guests will have already done some public speaking/discussion. If we were to do the Winchester Academy, maybe the potluck could be at the Holly Center.

Tuesday Oct 23: visit MREA: Marci will contact Tehri Parker to see what kind of program they could offer.

Lunch depends on schedule of events for the day.

High School: will contact various teachers. Pat Phair, Mark Polobitski, Neil Young, Lee

Schultz. Arrange for a speaking engagement at the High School.

Dinner: community dinner/reception at Chez Marche Café, with music: peace café! Our guests will be invited to speak. Marci to arrange musicians. May have chance to have guests provide some music as well.

Discussion about inviting various entities to this event including Jean Faraca from Public Radio; Someone from Jimmy Carter’s staff; Russ Feingold, Steve Kagen, and other public officials including the Governor, Barbara Lawton, local officials like the mayor and Kevin Peterson; Dan Naylor.

Wednesday/Thursday Oct 24: attend Rotary breakfast meeting 7am Wed. Sandy has influence here, and other supporters would be Mike Mertes, Dick Bidwell, John Gusmer, Terry Martin. Rotary may even want an evening reception. Ask Sandy to investigate their involvement.

After that, go back to host family and pack up stuff to get ready for travel to Artha.

Travel to Artha farm for workshop; meet people from other peace groups: Marci has had some contact with Judy Miner at WNPJ about inviting people from state peace groups to join us. We could have a nominal fee for them to participate, to cover costs of food and accommodation. Lodging to include the yoga studio, camping, nearby homes: Pease and Reckrey? Inne Choi?

Marci will check with WNPJ to find out if they have a Facilitator who could lead the workshop. Ideas include conflict resolution, combined with the overall theme of the trip which is “sharing our stories” Workshop needs to be very laid out, ie: an hourly schedule with people responsible for every aspect, including assigning rooms/accommodation, making of meals. (Bonni to help here!!!)

All agree that we need to include some personal development/feel good/ downtime activities like yoga, massage, a craft to share, or a recipe to share. (There is a kitchen in the Artha retreat house.) cross-cultural, walking in woods.

Afternoon teas Wed and Thursday are a must for our British guests.

Treasurer’s report: Pat not here. Kate reports that there is $790.14 in the account. We authorized her to write a check to WNPJ for $50 to renew our membership.
Details to pull off Rummage Sale at Sandy’s house this spring:

need date. Sandy will let us know what works for her. Most like the date May 17-18. Will see if this works for Sandy.
We voted and majority think the sale should be 2 days.
PD Hill will start plants early so that it can be a super plant sale.
Will do bake sale and have lemonade as well
We need really good stuff!!! No stained clothing or junk. Use this as an opportunity to lighten your load, minimize!

Upcoming Scholarship: Marci talked to Pat Reckrey who could not be here tonight. She is willing to send the letter out to the schools again, by March this year. We will also need a letter in the paper, Pat usually does this as well.
Peace Recruitment at High School: Larry will contact the school about dates that we can set up table again. Will hand out peace sh\cholarship info again and maybe cookies. Will try to be set up on days army is there.
Presentation from Sexual Assault Victim Services (CAP services) rep: She left early due to snow, but will come back to our next meeting. Marci shared some literature that she left. They are looking for volunteers.
MREA Pancake Breakfast: Discussed doing this again this summer. We did make a few hundred dollars last year selling t-shirts, CD’s and buttons. Bonni will be in charge of the food and we will again need volunteers. It will be Sunday morning, June 17. (yes that is fathers’ day) Bonni will ask WNPJ if we can have a percentage of the profit this year since we are all working at the event.
Upcoming Women to Women for Peace visit in October 2007: See separate notes on discussion about agenda for the trip. We also discussed fundraising for this event. Currently we have enough $ for our scholarship, and will need to raise about $2000-3000 to cover the expenses of the event. Upcoming fundraising events include:

We will need to do a funds appeal. Marci volunteered to write up an official description of our group and send it to the Waupaca Foundation so that they can receive funds for us. This way we do not need to register as a 501c3 organization. She has checked with Jack Rhodes on this. Will need to list officers. Marci volunteered to be listed as president, Pat as Treasurer and Bonni as Secretary. All agreed. Doing this will allow us to write a grant or do other public appeals for $$$ for the event in October.

The November meeting was a potluck meeting, where the film "Iraq For Sale" was viewed and discussed. In response to a query for "minutes" we received this report from one of the attendees.

"Not really any minutes, Bonni.

But after good food we settled down to a disturbing movie. " Iraq for Sale" tells stories of private firms who have made millions/billions in contracts for services in Iraq (security, transport, building) but seem to have taken little or no concern for the safety of the persons working for them. As a result the death of these workers seems insulting and cruel in light of the hugh profits these corporations have amassed. Sad and unsettling film .We shared thoughts and concerns in our discussion after the movie.

Good food. Good friends. Good wine. Good time. Thanks, Pat."

October 19, 2006

Treasurer’s Report: Pat Reckrey reports that the balance is at $221.13.
The last check written was to the speaker and that amount was $300.
Wreaths: Marci is going to send in the order next week. People encouraged to sell/place their orders between now and then. Packets for selling are at the Chez.
Women’s exchange program October 2007: no new news on this, just that it is going ahead as planned and that we need to discuss ideas for programs. There will be British, Palestinian and Israeli women coming and as stated in previous minutes we will be fundraising for part of their expenses. Marci did present at a recent Rotary meeting about this program to solicit involvement.
Peace Café on November 11: This will be a Saturday night event at the Chez. 7-10pm.
We are unable to get a speaker from the Madison Vets for Peace Group. Larry Craig had agreed via e-mail to be a speaker and he would be very good at it. He has a friend from New London who is also a vet for peace that he will contact to co-speak. Also, Can’t Lie Low will perform, Little Baba, and Pat Reckrey will introduce Maggie Lavin, who received the p4p scholarship. Jane Haasch volunteered to take money at the door. Marci will write an article for the paper and make some posters. Please everyone, attend this event! It was a very nice experience last year.
Children’s recital: at the last meeting members felt that it would be nice to have a children’s Christmas recital for peace. Marci contacted Kari Esbensen and the date has been set for Dec. 16 here at the Chez. It will be an afternoon event.
Peace investments: Megan brought a picture along that would be the cover of a card to be sold as an investment for peace at the holidays. Has not had feedback from Rick Munster yet.
Library table display idea: Pat Reckrey would like volunteers for the table setting display idea sponsored by the library, and ideas. Larry suggested having various peacemakers at each plate, the setup is Nov 20-25 and the display will be up til dec 29. viewers will vote with a dollar and the winner keeps the money, the others donate theirs to the libraray (I thik?) “bring peace to the table” would be our theme. Kate and Marci will meet at Pat’s house Nov 1 to plan this exhibit.
roadway cleanup: our next adopt a highway cleanup will be done this Saturday at 9am. Meet at E and Crystal Road.
Jane brought the DVD “Iraq for Sale” and would like someone to host a viewing of this. After much discussion it was decided that it will be viewed at our next meeting on Nov 16 at 6pm, at Kate’s house. This will be a potluck so bring a dish to pass!!! Her address is N1800 Virginia Dr. near the Red Mill. (258-0850) This will be our meeting for November.

Nobel Peace Prize Exhibit: The library is still hosting the exhibit – sometime into October. Be sure to visit it!
We are helping to sponsor this exhibition.

Winchester Academy: People for Peace is helping to bring Joseph Elder, PhD, from UW Madison to Winchester Academy on Monday, October 16th. His presentation is titled: “Nobel Peace Prize Winners”.
We will bring some fall goodies:
Pat H – apple bars
Steve – gallon of apple cider
Megan – pumpkin bars

Adopt-A-Highway: Kevin and Cathy did a cleanup on Sept 16th – we are committed to 3 clean-ups each year.
Our next scheduled date is Saturday, October 21st. We will meet at 9 AM at the intersection of Crystal Road and County E. Please join us if you possibly can!

Peace Exchange for 2007 – Marci shared information about the 07 exchange. This is an outgrowth of the exchange that Marci participated in last year in England. 3 women from England and 3 women from Palestine are planning to come to the US in October of 07. They are planning to spend 1 week with a Peace group in Maryland and then hope to come to Waupaca!
As part of this exchange, the Wisconsin Peace and Justice group is thinking about planning their yearly conference in Waupaca, to occur while the visitors are here.
Other possible activities: Visit MREA, Speak at a HS Assembly, An American Indian PowWow, tour LaClinica, Host a Peace Café, Day of relaxation at Ramlow’s???
Marci will be talking about this at a Rotary meeting in October – hopes they might want to help sponsor these women
People for Peace Commitment:
o provide lodging in our homes for 6 women
o help with airfare for women from Maryland to Milwaukee – all of airfare for the Palestinian women and half airfare for English women
o Provide transportation and food while in our area
o Cost estimated at around $2000 – Marci reminded us that we raised $6000 in one year to bring Ghandi here.
We decided to make this commitment.

Brochure Would be great to have a brochure on People for Peace tio handout at all events.
Marci will start work on this.

FundRaising: Besides raising funds these efforts provide a way to keep Peace in the public view. We brainstormed ways to work on this commitment this year:
Peace Wreath Sales – Marci has worked with an Oshkosh group to participate with them in selling Peace wreaths for the holidays. We will sell them for $38. We make about $11 on each wreath. We will take orders and then arrange for pick-up and delivery. Marci will prepare some information on this to show people when we are taking orders. Order packets are now available at the Chez.
Peace Cafe: Saturday November 11, at the Chez: music, poetry, honor our scholarship winner – Maggie Levin. Madison Veterans for Peace may be able to send some representation for the evening.
Peace Investment – a “stock” investment to give to friends and coworkers for Christmas or other occasions. Will be open ended for money amount. A Peace dove will hang on a tree in Bonnie’s window over the holidays with the name of person being honored or remembered. We will provide a card that giver can give recipient: Megan will work on Cover. Rick will work on inside of card. Hopefully prototype available by next meeting.
Rummage Sale – In April or May – works well as a recycling effort. Sandy volunteered her garage on Lake Street but wants lots of other committed workers. To include usual rummage, plus plants, baked goods – with all proceeds going to exchange. So start saving your goodies now!

People For Peace Minutes

August 17, 2006

‘Acting’ chair for the evening was Jane.
The meeting began at 7:15pm at the Chez.

Those present: Priscilla, Charlie, Larry, Steve, Debbie, John, Jane, and later, Bonnie.

Treasurer’s Report: Pat reported (in absentia) we had between $500-600 in our checking account. Recent income: $372 from pancake feed, and $73 from Peace Day donations.

Old Business:
Peace Day.
All concurred the evening was a success. People commented on newspaper coverage. People were pleased to see the two photos in the paper. There was some discussion of how we could get a bigger turn-out next year. Jane said she was considering inviting the Central American & Caribbean (C.A.S.S.) students from Fox Valley Tech. next year.

T-Shirt Sales.
It was discussed and decided that the T-shirts left over from last year should be marked down to $10 at upcoming events until they’re gone. This year’s style should not be reduced.

History of Nobel Peace Prize Exhibit.
The exhibit which we are sponsoring will be at the library beginning Sept 4th. Joseph Elder, PhD., UW Madison, will be the featured Winchester Academy speaker October 16th. His presentation is titled “Nobel Peace Prize Winners”.

New Business:
It was discussed and decided we would not participate in this year’s Fall-O-Rama.

New Fund Raising Ideas.
It was discussed and decided that next year we should sell sponsorships of lanterns for Peace Day. It was felt we could local businesses to participate and generate some additional revenue.

It was agreed that fund raising is easier if the money goes “toward” something specific. For example, if we told donors our goal was to double our scholarship fund for next year, all agreed that money would be relatively easy to raise. It was felt we may wish to identify these ‘projects’ to help with fund raising. One suggestion was to help implement the “Teaching Tolerance” program in our schools.

Organizational Structure
There was extensive discussion on the pros/cons of becoming a membership organization. The discussion was interesting, but there was no consensus to change anything.

Waupaca People for Peace Meeting

1. we did not have the checkbook, but we did have the money from both strawberryfest and the mrea wnpj pancake breakfast event.
strawberryfest: sold t-shirts buttons and cd's: $217
mrea: sold same: $134.
marci will deposit all the money in the bank under our account.

2. discussed peace day. below are the assignements of things that we need to have peace day.
Peace Day will be Sunday, August 6 at South Park. We will make lanterns, and then proceed to the beach for a program and the lantern float at dusk. (Times are still not set in stone but something like lanterns at 6:30, program 7:30 and float at 8:30? may adjust 1/2 hour forward...)
Assignmnets are as follows: (most of these jobs were volunteered for...)
Chamomile Ramlow will set up and sit behind a sales table. (t-shirts, buttons and cd's!)
Jane Haasch and Megan will inventory the lantern making supplies that are at Megan's house. they will bring them to South Park on the 6th and set up the event for the making of lanterns. Jane will invite the Enwalds to assist with this as they have shown some interest.
Larry and Steve will finish a flier that will be distributed. They will make about 50 copies. They will drop them off at the Chez.
Louise and Sandy were nominated to post these fliers. Louise could post them around town and Sandy could leave stacks at key places, ie Cronie's, the rec center, the Bookcellar, etc...
Marci will type the article that Steve wrote up for the paper. She will e-mail the typed version to Larry who will bring it to the County post. She will also e-mail it to Barbara Hoffman of Appleton peace group as requested. Bonni will edit the article for correctness. (Marci will clarify times and get them to Larry for the flier)
Louise will set up the doves at South Park. (may need volunteers...Kevin K?)
Kevin K. will man the kayak. Marci will ask Jonah to man the rowboat, or else perhaps Ken Karth?
Sandy and Marci will send invitations to the event to various groups.suggested: wicec, rotary, miniserial assoc, church youth groups from methodist and st mark's church (trisha) etc...
Tom Pease will set up sound. He will work on the program. Marci will help him.
Bill Kehl will do drumming.
Larry will contact the mayor to invite him.
It is hoped that Pat Reckrey will again read a poem, and that the Japanese exchange students will be there, along with any other exchange students in town at the time.
***Any other ideas for a program should be forwarded to Tom Pease so he can plan.

***It is understood that p4p members at the event will all help with cleanup.

***If the above people cannot do their job, then they need to make arrangements for someone else to do the job.

3. Kevin discussed the highway cleanup project for this coming Saturday. It was decided to reschedule this due to uncertain turnout. Kevin will reschedule this event and let everyone know.

Pat reported that we have $1487.13 in the checking account.

Winchester Academy is sponsoring Salmon Assiz this coming Monday, February 27th, at the Waupaca Library Meeting Room at 7:15 pm. Since this is the speaker that Dave Hathaway had suggested we sponsor (we didn’t), it might be good to encourage P4P folks to attend. He is speaking on Islam. Some of us heard him speak at UMC some time ago. Kristi Jackson worked with him.

Pat reminded us that Dave Hathaway had asked us about sponsoring someone to speak at Winchester Academy for United Nations Day in fall of 2006. If not this, then…. We need to follow up on this.

Steve asked whether the group was going to do something for Earth Day or Strawberry Fest. He is thinking about a table out in front of the Chez with t-shirts, buttons, literature, etc. Is anyone else interested in helping with this?

Pat reminded us of the rally in Point on March 18th, Saturday. She had been asked to participate (sing) with Raging Grannies but is declining due to situation right now in Iraq – too serious to be comfortable with sarcasm. Bonni said this is a Peace Fair at which we can have a table with info about P4P. It starts at 9:30, lunch served for a donation. It takes place at Pacelli High School and is organized by Concerned Citizens of Stevens Point. Entertainment will include Marci Beaucoup, Raging Grannies, Mike Miles. Bonni will forward the flyer to everyone. Do we want to be there? Our next meeting is two days before this event.

The Peace Poster exhibit is now moved to the high school. Larry, Steve, possibly Marci, Jane would be willing to spend some noon hours there to promote the P4P scholarship while the exhibit is up and to be alongside the military recruiters. Larry is very comfortable doing this and will bring some of his Vietnam memorabilia with him. Larry will contact Marci for details.

Jane brought up a request from Jon Petersen for help with the Sahrawi people who recently suffered a terrible flood which did not make the news at all. Half their housing was destroyed, another quarter damaged. Schools, hospitals, and other community buildings were destroyed. Jon is going there soon. We voted to donate $100 for school supplies. There were two absentee votes, one for and one against due to church involvement. All other votes were for the donation. This is why we specifically requested that the money go for school supplies. Jane mailed the check out.

The next meeting is Thursday, March 16th, 7 p.m. at the Chez. Kevin and Kathy are scheduled to talk about our section of County E that P4P sponsors.

after a lovely potluck dinner, items discussed at the meeting were as follows:

1. p4p meetings will continue to be on the 3rd thursday of the month at the chez marche cafe, unless there is a speaker in which case we will seek another venue.

2. Dan Naylor will speak on Nov 17 at a place yet to be determined (editor's note: meeting will be held at the Holly Center, see notice posted here ). Sandy will arrange a place, and get back to Marci who will let Dan know.
Kate Saunders will put a small blurb under community events in the county post. Marci will see if Bonni will write an article.
the following people volunteered to bring refreshments and plates, cups and napkins that evening: Pat Reckrey, Kate Saunders, Larry Craig, and Jane Haasch.

3. We discussed structure and direction for the future of people for peace. after discussion it was agreed that there should be a meeting leader. this position could be rotated.
the purpose of a meeting leader is to:

* keep meetings on task
* initiate agenda
* make sure there is one speaker at a time!

4. and there should be minutes of meetings. this task should also rotate, and minutes should be forwarded to bonni so that she can post them on the website.

5. Also, there will be a new method of notifying for meetings: Bonni will do this monthly via e-mail, Kate Saunders will put the monthly meetings in the paper, and people are encouraged to refer to the new blog/web site created by Bonni. all were supportive of this website idea and thankful to bonni for doing it!
in addition it was acknowledged that it can be stressful to put on events without more recognized organization, and that when people want to do certain projects, they will be responsible and the group will be willing to commit energy.

people felt that what they liked about the meetings and the group was:

* connecting
* free structure
* activities we do are important
* positive effect
* solidarity especially in times of war
* open to other community members

6. we reviewed our mission statement and clarified our basic purpose. differentiation was made between p4p and political groups. many p4p members are in other groups as well, through which political work can be done more directly. the goals of p4p supercede politics.

7. we discussed membership at length and it was felt that we should remain open, that whoever is at the meeting is a member. it was decided not to post the membership names on the website. this topic probably warrants further discussion.

8. adopt a highwauy: kevin presented info on our adopted highway. it is too late this year to go out and clean up, but the sign is up on E. Kevin has all the necessary equipment for the spring cleanup. we can do this activity from april to november. we will watch the instructional video (10 minutes) at the march meeting and then set dates to go out and clean up. most present were interested in this activity.

9. treasurer's report: we have $1590.13 in our account.

10. t-shirts: Louise has a friend that can silk screen shirts for $7 each, and can do short runs. Steve asked about logo. it was suggested that louise and Steve get together and plan this.

11. Pat Reckrey reminded us that in January, the 19th, we agreed to host a speaker on gay/lesbian issues. 1/2 hour presentation. this is our regular meeting night. Sandy agreed to book a room for this. we will communicate on e-mail about the details of this event.

12. also pat followed up on the winchester academy, and all the topics are not real good for us to sponsor. Septmeber 2006 UN day would be a good topic, and there was discussion about getting a good speaker on this and tying it in to the upcoming library exhibit on nobel prize winners that will be borrowed from the Bradford England Peace museum. Pat will look into this more.

13. upcoming history of art in the peace movement display from Bradford will be displayed and cosponsored by the arts board in January. Marci discussed cost and it will be about $320 US to cover postage both ways. Pat will write out a check after marci confirms details f how to send the money with Bradford. the arts bnoard will let us know when they can plan a reception for this event. all seemed interested.

14. peace cafe coming up friday november 11, 7pm, at the chez: marci discussed details, and asked p4p members to attend and someone to take money. cover charge of $5 will be split between p4p and wcab. lineup includes pat reckrey: poetry, barbara hoffman from appleton, folk music; kathryn jeffers, reading from her book about her dad in ww2, and marci beaucoup, peace songs with littl baba. also perhaps barb achtn doing a closing song.

15. lastly louise gave a report on her trip to washington dc, and it was very interesting. she shared alot of literature that she brought back, and reported that she sold over $100 worth of buttons and t-shirts.
